This Year's Morning Meeting

Last year I posted about our morning meeting board and why I love it so much. I thought I ought to make another post about this year's meeting and board to show how morning meeting changes with our ages and goals!

A little bit about morning meeting: We start each day together with prayer, songs, calendar work, number of the day and our weekly Bible verse. No matter the ages ranges you have, morning meeting is a great way to start together and launch your learn time as you start your day.

Our board this year looks like this:

Songs

Each week these songs change and relate in some way to what we are learning that week. Often the songs relate to our science topics or Bible lessons. This year my daughter has started preschool, so the little cards have her songs on them, which we also do during morning meeting.

Number of the Day cups

Each day we add a yellow cube to the ones cup and change the number to match. When the ones cup has ten ones, they get traded out for a ten rod which goes into the tens cup. Once we reached the 100th day of school, we traded the ten rods for a 100 square. Each day we read the number and also explain it. For example, in the picture you see 1 one hundred, 4 tens, and 7 ones. The numerals are color-coded red, blue, and green to match the Montessori method so that it matches with some of the Montessori materials we use in math. Doing number of the day and the associated work with it really builds a solid foundation for math skills. Older students have number of the day work in their folders.

Weekly bible verse(s)

The scroll has our 1st grade verse on it which also has a song that we do each morning. The card with the animal on it is my preschooler's verse.

Art Appreciation

This board also has a piece of art on it for our art appreciation, which we do weekly. This isn't actually a part of our morning meeting but is a nice place for our art to live each week.

Calendar

Our calendar is on the wall this year instead of on the board. My preschooler is in charge of doing our main calendar each day. I put Velcro dots on each square so that she could put them up easily. She is working on understanding which square to put it in and getting the number right side up! Older students have calendar work in their folders.

We also do the weather each day. My preschooler is able to do this little weather board on the wall while older students have weather charts which they use to graph the weather at the end of each month.

There are SO many skills that are targeted during morning meeting. For busy homeschooling parents, having a solid morning routine that intentionally targets skills means that even when plans don't go as expected, your children have still engaged in important learning in a short amount of time!
